D.- Studies performed to obtain academic positions in Uruguay

To be admitted in academic positions of degree I and II and join a Department in Uruguay, it is required to be tested in basic and contemporary knowledge in different subjects by expert colleagues of longer academic careers. Preparations for the test to obtain each position by open contest usually take one year or more. Fields of study required by the Dept. of Biophysics, Faculty of Medicine, were: Mathematics (Calculus, Differential equations, Numerical calculus, Algebra, Biomathematics); Statistics (Discrete and Continuous Distribution, Hypothesis tests, stochastic and random processes, regression and correlation tests); Computer programming (basis of programming in basic, fortran and C++, implementation of mathematical models), Biochemistry (Biochemical methods to study macromolecules, molecule structures), Cellular and Molecular Biology, Cardiovascular Physiology, Pulmonary Physiology, Neurobiology (Biophysics of Vision and Audition), Cybernetics (Feedback mechanisms), Physical Chemistry (Colligative properties, Thermodynamics, Kinetics of reactions), Basis of excitability (Several topics in ion channels), Muscle Physiology and Radiobiology (Effects of radiation in living organisms). Tests consist of free written expositions of knowledge for three hours in a random topic in any of these subjects, experimental work in chosen topics for 1 day and lectures in chosen subjects for 1 hour.
